I am looking for information on lightweight composite materials
such as carbon fiber, graphite, kevlar, etc.

Specifically, I would like:
  + Sources for purchasing such material in tubes, rods, sheets, etc.
  + Methods for tooling, joining, and working with these materials.
  + Methods for using carbon fiber at home (I picture something like
    working with fiberglass -- lay fiber mesh on a form, etc.)
  + General characteristics of these materials (strength, weight, 
    density, impact resistance, etc.)
  + Any experiences anyone has had working with this type of material.

I've tried to find carbon fiber in the local hobby shops and plastic
distributors, but had no luck.

Any info is greatly appreciated.  I'll summarize e-mail responses.
Please post if you have something of general interest.
