I would like to include sections on the state of computing, its progress, its applications, its problems, in third world countries in one of my courses. The course is called Tools for Computing, and along with learning how to use an integrated package, the course has students using e-mail, News, and reading lots of newspaper & magazine articles on computers and society (crime, privacy, telecommuting, elections, and so forth). I've not included much on computers and their impact in the third world, and I would like to do so this coming semester. Does anyone have any references I could consult? I would very much like some short pieces that I could put on reserve for students to read and discuss, as well as some lengthier pieces for background lectures? As always, thanks in advance.
