If you haven't elsewhere, you have to give the modem the ATV0 command to get responses as numbers rather than words. And if you don't leave the modem in answer mode, the software won't get a chance to do anything because it will never know the phone is ringing. That's the modem's job, so your ATS0=1 is correct. Since you are using the equivalent of the ModemWorks "custom cable", everything else you described sounds about right. Unless you are using the demo version of ModemWorks and it has already passed 64000 characters, thus going defunct.
