I have the same problem with my HP-48SX (Corvallis Rev E) except in my case an entire column of pixels is blank. Changing batteries, running self test, pressing reset, adding/removing cards do not work. In desperation, I even tried the Display Melt procedure in the hope that the screwy voltage would jolt the pixels back on. No go. Sometimes, however, whilst running self test (which says OK 48 by the way, the little liar!) the column of pixels magically come on for a split second before disappearing again. I rang up HP in Australia and they told me to send it in and get a replacement but I haven't done so yet because I need it (columnless and all) for a couple of exam papers. I will probably send it in after my exam. Hope yours is still under warranty! christie
