I have a CD player and a PC at home.  Would I be able to use the
player as a CD-ROM device, and if so, what additional equipment
(hardware and software) would be necessary in order to pull this off?

I know I've seen PC software that uses a CD-ROM device to read audio
CD's (reading items like total running time, program list, and other
formalities), but I have yet to see an audio compenent CD player used
as a CD-ROM.   tia ...
