In many ways MacWrite II and Microsoft Word are two different beasts, MacWrite II is simply not as high-end or full-featured as Word but is easier to use. Perhaps MacWrite Pro will change that. For reviews you might want to take a look at the 3rd Edition of The Macintosh Bible. For a personal opinion I would reccommend WriteNow for a low-end word processor and Nisus for high-end. I think both are significantly better than MacWrite II or Word and I have used all of them. In fact I use Word quite alot because it is used so much by the U of I.
