Thanks to everyone who responded.  Dispite the fact that Emacs felt
the original request was important enough to send out twice, :-) I'll
summarize only once (I hope).  Eleven helpful folks out there either
wrote back or posted, here is what they had to say:


Commercial:
===========

VersaTerm:
   4 people were using VersaTerm or VersaTerm pro and were VERY happy
   with it.  It seems to have all the functionality I need.  It's
   available from:

   It may or may not be available from software houses (disagreement
   here), but costs 80 or 90 dollars.

White Night:
VT240:
   one vote each, they seemed happy with them

MacTerminal:
   nobody advocated it, but I don't know why.  It must either be
   expensize or obsolete.


FTPable: free or cheap
======================

MacLayers:
   4 people recommended MacLayers.  I downloaded it from
   "sumex-aim.stanford.edu" and have been using it.  It is similar to
   UW (which I haven't tried yet) in that you can have multiple
   virtual windows to the same machine with help from Unix servers.
   It also lets you download while typing in another window.
   Unfortunately, it's file transfer is rather primitive, only
   allowing downloads, and it doesn't have a "spiffy little popup
   window" (TM).  Its emulation is very good, and runs Emacs fine (so
   far).  You can change the size of the screen as well as the font
   (to 4 or 5 different ones).


UW:
   2 folks mentioned UW, which I haven't tried yet.  It's an older
   program, but I don't know how recent the latest updates are.  It is
   apparently similar to MacLayers.


Zterm:
   nobody said anything about it.


Comments:
=========

For the time being, I'm going to stick with MacLayers and rely on
Zterm for file transfers.  If we could just get Werner Uhrig
(MacLayers) together with the author of Zterm (for the file transfer),
we'd really have something.  The consensus seems to be to get
VersaTerm if you want to spend some money.
