THAT worked, but I couldn't undo it. Renaming the partitions again and rebooting caused the checkerboard pattern you mention to appear, followed by a System 6 boot. I deleted System 7 and reinstalled it on its partition, and now I'm happily running 7 again. I haven't tried switching back to 6.0.5 by renaming partitions. I tried using SystemSwitcher, but the machine always boots with System 7. I've got a IIcx, 8 Meg, no internal drive, LaCie external with Silverlining 5.31.
