When you're out of ammo and fuel, you have to land to get more. During a dogfight, seeing someone line up on a runway makes this little flag pop up on their radar image: "Sitting Duck" or alternatively "Missile Fodder". One way to get around this is to land sideways. All you have to do is touch your gear to the ground and make a good landing, and you get more fuel and ammo. Your opponent never sees you lining up for the landing, because it's obvious that you can't land sideways (right?). Here's a hint: You can come in nice and low if you use ground effect.
