I saw an answer to this question many months ago and mis-filed it or
forgot to extract it...

How do I get LaTeX to display 6.4 degrees as 6.^degree symbol 4 ?

I recall that some respondent to the original question pointed out that
this is somewhat archaic - maybe it is but I still want to know how!
