I need left justified equations in TeX with equation numbers.  I
have gone through exercise 19.4 in the TeXbook.  It concludes:
``This doesn't work with equation numbers; Appendix D illustrates how
to handle them as well.''  I have gone through the appendix but
either don't understand what is there or don't find it.  Can anyone
help me with this one?
