Thank you to all who responded to my question.  The suggested solutions may
be sorted in 2 groups:

	1: A missing \end{...}
	2: A missing }

Group no. 1 had the right answer. Imagine a titlepage spanning some 120 pages
and a number of chapters!!

Kresten in Aarhus suggested that LaTeX would discover this and issue a
proper error message, provided my LaTeX was plain.  To my knowledge our
LaTeX *is* plain, but it did not complain. (Just for info.)
