What fixed it for me was very simple: ALWAYS PUT LQ PRINTERS IN "DRAFT" MODE BEFORE RUNNING GS 2.2! This is necessary because the "\" command for horizontal positioning, used in GS 2.2, is interpreted differently by the printer (using a different assumed dot width) based on whether it is in DRAFT mode or LQ mode.
