Compressors often have very tight inner loops where all the CPU is spent and
where slight increases in efficiency can result in major increases in
speed.

In this case, the difference between a static array (say for your hashtable)
and a dynamic one can actually be real, particularly for the more efficient
compressors that only do a few instructions per loop.
