That is a standard feature in many packages, including nn. Spending more time reading news (!) I keep finding myself hitting ESC in Elm and getting beeped at ... :-) As for a simple editor Micro Emacs would be my choice too; it gives you easy editing with arrow keys with default insertion and backspace deleting for you. All you need to know are the help and write/quit key sequences. Though on the face of it simple, it is quite powerful and you can progress to full GNU Emacs after a while ... Tim --
