Actually, it seems that Windows features are making their way into DOS, such
as the extended memory drivers.  Yes, Windows may always require DOS, since
Microsoft would like to have two of their products on every PC instead of
one, but Windows may end up using DOS only to load itself.  It currently uses
DOS only for file I/O, and I have heard that Windows 3.1 will go directly to
the hardware for disk access, speeding things up and allowing for pre-emptive
multitasking.
