If someone's heard of ResEdit then they probably have a bit of an idea where to find it (try user groups, ftp.apple.com, etc). Secondly, this isn't a case of making a program do something it wasn't meant to do. For example, Microsoft Word will open many types of files including MacWrite files. Naturally, Word does not contain any icons for MacWrite files, only for it's native file formats (text, Word, dictionaries, etc). So, Word does not have an FREF resouce for file of type MACA (MacWrite). Therefore, the Finder does not know that Word will open MacWrite files. By adding an FREF resource for a file type of MACA, the Finder will then know that Word can open MACA files. This is not a kludge. It is simply one of the things that Microsoft will be changing when they bring out the next version of Word. The fact that the current version of Word does not have a MACA FREF is because it is not Sys 7 savvy. If, by adding or changing a resouce using ResEdit, I could make the current version of Word accept Apple Events, or start using Publish and Subscribe, would this be a kludge too? Or would it be a sign of a good implementation of a new system feature? > >Greg Gary Makin.
