I just have a simle question: How do I get missions in Elite?

The first time I played, 17 hours went and I got no missions.
Then I heard that it was because I never made an galactic hyperjump,
in other words: I played 17 hours on the first galactic map.

I have now played for 13 hours, and have just maked it through the
first mission. I got it on map 2, after I had been all the maps
through one time.

My question is now simple: Where must I look to get the other missions?
Is it anything about time and place? (New mission at place x after time y)
