No, the GIF file format is supposed to be the same across systems. What you probably encountered was a stupid "MacBinary" header that people often add when uploading Macintosh files to other systems, on the assumption that it is important to restore the file attributes when the file is downloaded to another Macintosh. They really ought not to do this when uploading GIF files.
