There are actually two very different modes that the hp48 transmits in, printer mode and serial mode. Printer mode is suitable for reasonably long distances, serial is very simple (no carrier). My company sells a small interface unit that interfaces over the IR and gives you 4 Analog inputs, 4 digital inputs and 4 digital outputs among other things.
