The existing systems have too low a MTBF. Attempting to do multitasking on a machine without memory just doesn't work. MTBF must be brought up to at least 30 days running the Monkey with multiple applications with every DA and init in widespread use loaded. Bringing out System 7 without protected mode so that it would work on that boat-anchor luggable was a terrible mistake. Apple may have blown its chance to make its machines that cost like workstations work like workstations. John Nagle (and no, A/UX, with its 92-step installation process, unprotected Mac environment, and slow operation, isn't a solution.)
