The System 6 system has the Desktop Manager installed. +> +> Thanks in advance from me too, +> Steve (langer@control.uchicago.edu) I've solved my problem! But I don't find the solution very comforting! I ultimately had to restore the entirety of the System folder from backup. But even after restoring, I still had the same "unable to boot, checkerboard flicker" problem. By (divine? :-) "happenstance", I happened onto the "Set Startup..." dialog and noticed that the (restored - *twice* now!) System 6 partition (that wouldn't boot) startup was set to Finder - not MultiFinder. This is (was) weird, because the startup was set to MultiFinder when it was backed up. Well, to make an already way too long story only a little bit longer, I set the startup to MultiFinder and restarted and, low and behold, THE PARTITION NOW BOOTS! (Obviously there's something going on here that I don't understand. Can some enlightened soul possibly clear my confusion?) Anyway, all seems well. I can now consistently boot Systems 6 and 7.
