As I'm a computer science student, main subject >operating systems, I feel quite an attraction towards more powerful machines >(typing this on a SUN SPARCstation 2). ^^^^^ Wow. (That's a _nice_ machine...) If you are fanatic in Sparcs, consider the Sparc Clones...(watch out for the next "iX magazine", a "Kommilitone" (don't know it in English) is writing an article about compatibility of them - (one of those testing machines is standing next to me...) > I read some very enthusiastic articles about the NeXT computers in some ^^^^ no, in ALL magazines. Because they would lie if they were NOT enthusiastic... ;-) >German magazines, so this machine looks quite interesting to me. The other ^^^^^^ You're kidding, aren't you??? >machine I'd be interested in is the ATARI TT - please, no flames for that, ^^^^^^^^ Actually I WAS interested in them, too. This was 2 years ago, when the 1st Next arrived in Germany (d'Art) But the TT took A LOOOOOONG while to arrive... And I had the oportunity to talk for a little while with the developer of the TT-Unix. About 2 (1.5) years ago as well. (Propably I was one of the 1st persons in Germany who played with it a little bit...) - But the Developer did not know what vt100 means, as I asked him if the TT can emulate this........... If you look at the performance - forget it. And: I took them YEARS to get it running - do you think it works now??? (BTW: In the next issue of iX or c't there will be a testing of the Amiga UX. - This machine iseven worse.) So if you want Unix - Get a Unix machine. If you want to play - Get a Amiga. If you want a cheap textsystem - Get Atari (ST!) If you want to get sick of it - Get an IBM. >but it's much cheaper, can run UNIX, too, and ... I can use ALL the soft- ^^^^^^^ wrongo. ^^^^^^^^ Yet another joke? ^^^ 3rd No. One more thing: The NeXT runs a 100% compatible (as I found so far) bsd Unix, mach based. So it knows about threads and other stuff and the kernel is much smaller than for example this up-blown ATT SYSVR4... >ware I already bought for my ST. And software for the NeXT isn't as cheap, >is it? The Next is not cheap - it is worth every buck you pay for it. (and actually even more than that.) In Germany you get the NeXT for less than 10000 DM if you're a student. (But you are) - In the US you pay 50%... BTW I paid 17.000 for a b/w slab, 800MB HDD, 20 MB RAM, 150 MB Archive Streamer, V32(bis), V42bis, MNP, etc. (and soon fax) Modem. > But to decide correctly, I will have to SEE one of these fantastic NeXTs ^^^ ######### YES! (I wonder how it comes that you have never seen one...where do yo live??) >and play a little bit with it, for example, to find out how fast it does its >screen-redraw (could probably take long as it uses display-postscript, I >bet). ^^^ ;-) Ok, 100 bucks? - You lost already! Sometimes I work on a sparc 1. I find the NeXT faster. Regardless if you run X11 or NextStep. The NeXT IS fast, believe me. (at least with 20MB ;-)) > Sorry, if this question has already been answered many times before - I >read this newsgroup for the first time in the middle of last week. Now, before I waste any more time and try to describe something that cannot be pressed in words without loosing the subject, - Just have a look at the NeXT...
