great stuff Dec. Now when I compile code that says
	ar clq libbarf.a local1.o local2.o ../longpath/subpath/file1.o \
		../longpath/subpath/file2.o
I get two instances of objects named:
		../longpath/subp.o
in my archive. Just what the docter ordered when building Andrews for 
instance.

thank goodness for project GNU.
