Under Ultrix 4.2, /dev/xcons seems to be automatically set back to permissions 622 (owner read/write, others only write) after the current user logs out. When this happens, the next user to log in is not able to read from /dev/xcons and redirect console output to a window. What is resetting these permissions (my guess is the Xprompter), and is there any way to stop it? Perhaps dxsession resets the permissions correctly, but I don't run DECwindows. I have gotten around this problem by creating a copy of /dev/xcons called /dev/xconsole. The permissions on this device remain as I set them, and I read console output from there instead of from /dev/xcons. - Michael ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael E.
