Message-ID: <1991Jun25.170013.19600@elroy.jpl.nasa.gov> Date: 25 Jun 91 17:00:13 GMT Sender: news@elroy.jpl.nasa.gov (Usenet) Reply-To: pjs@euclid.jpl.nasa.gov Followup-To: comp.windows.x Organization: Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA/Caltech Lines: 18 Nntp-Posting-Host: euclid.jpl.nasa.gov My Sun workstation is a minimal NIS (YP) client (although not for much longer, after this). Recently we rebooted the NIS master, and while this was going on, I tried to start an xterm. I got the error message NIS: server not responding for domain "navdev"; still trying. and it started successfully when the NIS master came back up. Well, what does xterm (or any other X client) need NIS for when I'm opening the window on the local host? I did a trace on xterm later, but the NIS master was up by then and I couldn't tell what system calls were accessing NIS. -- This is news. This is your | Peter Scott, NASA/JPL/Caltech brain on news.
