Which font are you using for xterm, the default fixed width ones in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc, or some of the ones in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/{75dpi,100dpi}? I'd guess the latter. Try running xlsfonts for the default 6x13 font and then for one of the fixed width fonts from the Adobe or Bitstream sets.
