Today's topics: Let's get started again! (Rob Gross) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Rob Gross Subject: Let's get started again! Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1991 22:16 EDT Since there are a large number of new readers, and since it has been about three months since the last issue, I thought that it might be good to (a) check that all the addresses on the list were reasonably current and (b) pose a few questions to get discussion started again. Please do not feel obligated to restrict your submissions to the following subjects. 1) What's happening with the START talks? They seem to have stalled out over what the Boston Globe (a liberal newspaper) claims are relatively minor problems that could be solved if the parties on each side put their minds to it. I haven't been following this at all closely; anyone care to summarize the facts? 2) Does anyone have any hard facts or speculation about the armed forces in Yugoslavia? As the country moves closer to break-up daily, that might be the next potential trouble spot. 3) It is possible that the short Iraqi war makes a good case for a higher level of military preparedness than I am comfortable with. Can anyone make the case that US interests would have been better served by letting sanctions last for a year before starting military action? Note: Obviously, the great loss of life in Iraq can be used to attack the war on moral grounds. However, I am asking for an argument based purely on selfish US interests, and not morality. I could, of course, keep going, but I'd rather hear from you.
