Get the departmnent to fork out a few quid for a decent sequencer that you can use (for research of course!) Seriously every computing department should have seqeuncing and MIDI soft/hardware; after all... There are some faily cheap sequencers out there for the Mac. Recommend looking through the back pages of back issues of KEYBOARD & ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN, especially in the small ads you'll find something I'm sure. If I run across one I'll post you.
