Reference Paul Wood's recent posting on the behaviour of malloc() on
the Mac, I've managed to get a warning out of lint on a similar piece
of code (tho' it *runs* ok on an XT).  Try casting the argument to
unsigned - it makes no sense, but may make a difference...
