It looks like I'm clearly (!) looking for whois. I didn't know the database and server can be local - I thought it always queried the SRI machine (should have read the man...) It's still a bit complicated for what I had in mind, and aside from the Mac ClientDA (I *think* it can do whois) I don't know of any PC clients, but it's a start.
