You need a mail-server not FTP. "ftp" is file transfer protocol and is a "lan/wan/ether/token net" protocol. A mail-server will take "certain" commands from the subject line of mail messages and then process them in a prescribed way. Try getting your friend to check out the archie program at quiche.cs.mcgill.ca; login archie; run something like "prog server".... that should give you a good list to peruse.
