I have been using PasTeX for a number of months, now, and find it MUCH better
than CommonTeX.  I am a TeX user from UNIX systems before the Amiga, and 
PasTeX compares well with the text-based TeX versions for unix machines.

get the new version of PasTeX from ab20.larc.nasa.gov.  It has the
translated documentation.

unless you want to do some really difficult stuff, don't use plain TeX.  Use
LaTeX instead.  LaTeX is a macro package that runs `on top of' TeX.  LaTeX
is available from a number of sites in the US, and I belive it is also
available from ccadfa.cc.adfa.oz.au.  Drop me a line if you can't find it,
or install it.

there are two groups you can look in: aus.tex, and comp.text.tex.
