I suggest you keep trying -- practice, practice, practice. What I usually do is creep forward until Rick's hands are over the edge of the platform. Then when the time is right (I believe that's just when the firing noise starts) I jump up and to the right. When I land, I immediately jump up and to the right again (in fact, I just keep my joystick pointing up and to the right until after the second jump). If timed perfectly, Rick will jump over the spears being fired from the snake head. Keep trying, but know that there are worse times ahead. I have found Rick Dangerous II to be a little easier (I made it through the first three levels in a couple of weeks). Good Luck!
