Yes there is a MIDI file format, and it is not IFF. I have a copy that
I can post, but it is available in the MIDI newsgroups and possibly
by ftp. I got my copy by mail server.

    The complete MIDI spec (including MIDI Time Code and the MIDI file
    format can be retrieved from LISTSERV at AUVM by sending a mail message
    to LISTSERV@AUVM.BITNET with the full text of the mail being

    GET MIDISPEC PACKAGE
