As long as your dissertation doesn't require graphics, you can be up and running with a laser printer very quickly. Most (but not all, so check before you buy or rent) lasers have settings for IBM and/or Epson emulation printer input. So select this option on the laser, use any Word Writer 5 compatable printer file driver (IBM or Epson), and use any of the printer interfaces to connect the laser to your C64. My preference is the Xetec Super Graphic Jr. However ALL the interfaces on the market today perform very well.
