If you are asking about how to do that, I don't know except to tell you to send a message to the person who added you to the list. I don't have the address handy. I believe a mailing list will be setup for comp.sys.hp48 by the same person that is doing it now. As for comp.sources.hp48, I will be glad to add you and anyone else to a mailing list for this group. As for comp.sys.palmtops, I don't know. I have no plans to setup a mailing list for that. If noone else sets up a mailing list for comp.sys.hp48, then I will create one. > 2. How ,if at all, will the change from a INET to USENET group >affect people that have access to comp.sys.handhelds through BITNET only. ie >can't transfer files directly etc? It shouldn't affect you at all. The change from INET to USENET is no big deal as far as I know. All it does is make it an official USENET group. All the people who currently carry comp.sys.handhelds will continue to carry it after it is changed, unless they decide not to carry it any more. If anything, it should make comp.sys.handhelds a little more wide spread. > 3. Since I have only had access to Comp.Sys.Handhelds through BITNET >since the end of April (I am not an expert) what are INET & USENET ? I can't really answer this. As far as I knew, all groups were USENET groups until I got a message from news to remove invalid USENET newsgroups. In that message was comp.sys.handhelds. So I asked why was comp.sys.handhelds being removed and I was told that it is an INET group not a USENET group. I included it in the vote because I thought that if comp.sys.hp48 & comp.sys.palmtops fail then comp.sys.handhelds should be an official USENET newsgroup since it will be carrying quite a bit of good stuff. Plus, I feel like that a USENET group has a chance of being carried by more sites than INET only groups. This is only a guess, I don't know for sure. Anyone who knows more about what INET groups are please respond to this question. > 4. What are the file headers you talk about for archiving. Are they >PC dependent or are the something that is done by the calculator? Neither, the headers I plan on adding is for a Unix program called rkive. It will automatically save all articles for you without you worrying about grabbing them. For people on the mailing list this means nothing for you. Your messages are automatically saved in your mailbox anyway. But for people on Unix machines it means that they can have all the articles archived every night as they come down and they don't have to worry about the articles being expired before they get a chance to save them. We only keep news messages around for 5 days. Having a uniform format will also make it easier for us to maintain the archive sites. I know that it will take a whole lot less time for me to keep our archive site up to date. Also, with it having the rkive headers and being in comp.sources, it will probably be automatically archived by other sites who archive comp.sources.* groups. So all around it means that we will have greater access to the postings in comp.sources.hp48. Chris -- spell@seq.uncwil.edu thebeach!spell@seq.uncwil.edu
