Our HP 720 is _slow_ ! Keywords: hp,720,slow,cobra,dhrystone Message-ID: <4404@idefix.informatik.uni-kiel.dbp.de> Date: 27 Jun 91 09:15:04 GMT Article-I.D.: idefix.4404 Organization: Universitaet Kiel, Germany Lines: 42 Yesterday we got a HP 720 for test purposes. Since our main test program doesn't run on this machine (although it did on previous HP PA machines, it dies im malloc()), I tried dhrystone. This is what I got (best of 8 runs): Dhrystone(1.1) time for 500000 passes = 8 This machine benchmarks at 60606 dhrystones/second Ok, this is maybe an old dhrystone version, but our SPARC 2 delivers: Dhrystone(1.1) time for 500000 passes = 10 This machine benchmarks at 45731 dhrystones/second In article <2167@brchh104.bnr.ca> (irf@kuling.docs.uu.se (Bo Thide')), I found the following values for the Cobra: dhrynr(without reg, without optimization,500000 iter): 58823 Dhrystones/sec dhryr(with reg, without optimization,500000 iter): 74738 Dhrystones/sec dhrynro(without reg, with optimization,500000 iter): 100401 Dhrystones/sec dhryro(with reg, with optimization,500000 iter): 100000 Dhrystones/sec I have compiled with: cc -D_XPG2 -Wl,-a,archive +O3 -o dry -DREG=register dhrystone.c (taken from above article, but other options deliver worse values). The output of uname -asnrvmi is: HP-UX hp720 A.B8.01 A 9000/720 14904132 Some other (small) programs show only 2-3 times better performance than my SPARC 1. What do I do wrong ? (wrong compiler, wrong options, wrong OS ?) I have some more complaints about the machine (the keyboard is awful, how does the vi recognize the size of the windows, where is lpr, is sendmail standard, how can I export filesystems (NFS)), but most things work quite well (NIS, VUE, ...). We have to do some more tests, but where is the POWER of the machine ? Thanks in advance for any information, Claus --- .signature ignored
