I am seeking advice about standard methods for using the printer
(parallel) port on PCs in a bidirectional manner.

There are many peripherals available which do this, most being
designed for laptops where the printer port is the highest-rate
interface available.

I am in particular looking for methods which will not clash
with software protection devices.

If you can suggest appropriate techniques, cite references or
example code, please send me mail.
