I was rewriting some backup scripts with a view to automating
the restore process, when I ran into the following problem. It 
seems that sun restore insists on prompting for the "next volume" 
and whether or not to set the "owner/mode" on '.' and it aborts 
if it detects that it is receiving data from a pipe. Every time 
I attempted to run the command:

rsh exabyte_machine "dd if=/dev/nrst0 bs=51200" | \
restore xvf /dev/nrst0 \
/etc/sendmail.cf \
/etc/aliases \
/etc/aliases.dir \
