Get xloadimage from your local comp.sources.x archive, or from
wuarchive.wustl.edu.  It does more than GIF, too.

Nice tip: Use FRACTINT (on a DOS system) to generate a nice image, and put
it on your root window using the -onroot option of xloadimage.
