I would like e.g. a macro \newcomment#1 such that using \newcomment{proof} will make all text between \begin{proof} .. \end{proof} disappear from the output of TeX -- knowing that this can be a very large piece of text. I know some macros for just commenting, but I don't know how to generalize them to comment out any environment at will.
