Two books by Douglas Young:

  X Windows Systems Programming and Applications with Xt
  X Windows Systems Programming and Applications with Xt OSF/MOTIF Edition

Both published by Prentice Hall in the U.S. are well written with
many examples.  If you have OSF/Motif,  get #2,  otherwise get #1.
