I dunno about your xset, but ours says...

	[Thunder] 10> xset
	usage:  xset [-display host:dpy] option ...
[...]
	    To disable bug compatibility mode:
		-bc
	    To enable bug compatibility mode:
		bc
[...]

Try xset bc instead of xset -bc, maybe?
