The October 1982 issue of Wireless World (pp.49-54) has an article on the
construction of an electronic compass.  It was entitled "Electronic Compass
using a Fluxgate Sensor", by Neil Pollock.  The components seem to be
easily available.  I have yet to build it, but it looks easy enough.
