The Blue Angels changed from the F-4 to the A-4 in the 70's because of the oil crises, the Thunderbirds changed for the F-4 to the T-38 a the same time (I believe that it was over the winter of 1974-1975). IMHO it was both a gain and a loss, the A-4 could do things that a Phantom could only dream about, and in a smaller airspace. The Phantom, on the other hand, was simply majestic and awesome.
