magtape problem found
Finally happened to get a tape which showed the magtape problem
consistently enough to permit investigation.  The V7 magtape driver
(known to be weak on error-handling) contained code which may be ok
for good drives (oh, to be able to afford one!) but was a real disaster
on flaky drives like ours.  Removed the relevant four lines, and a
tape which resisted five successive attempts to read it now reads fine.
