crash cause found
The cause of the crashes turns out to be a problem with the bdwrite
mod made to the exece code some days ago.  The second part of the
mod can be bypassed if the function in question takes an abnormal
exit, and this can result in stomping random blocks on the swap area.
Fixing this will take some thought, and can wait;  in the meantime,
we are running on a somewhat old version of the sys1.c kernel module.
