How come all of a sudden we need downtime? [Why downtime? Because we have strong suspicions that a good deal of the trouble we have had with backups in the last year or so (backups that are supposed to be consistent but aren't, backups that should restore smoothly but don't, etc.) is due to the unwise practice of trying to get a snapshot of a file system that is changing underfoot. (Actually, "insane" would be more appropriate than "unwise", since in the event of real trouble, those backups are all that stands between us and total loss of all files.) It is agreed that the time is not the best; it is a temporary compromise. A better way of handling this is in the works. -- henry]
