crash yesterday
The cause of yesterday's crash is not known with certainty.  It appears
the system hung up somehow internally:  there were plenty of processes
ready to run swapped out, but none in core, and the swapper and the disk
driver (roughly speaking) disagree on whether there was a swap in progress.
And the system can't run processes if they aren't in core.
